WHY KNOXVILLE?
Knoxville is the third-largest city in the state of Tennessee and is home to the University of Tennessee, the state’s flagship university. It’s one of the largest cities in Appalachia and home to large businesses like Pilot Flying J, Tennessee Valley Authority, The H. T. Hackney Company (the nation’s fourth largest wholesale grocer). Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Y-12 National Security Complex in nearby Oak Ridge are home to significant scientific development. Nearly 200,000 people live inside the city limits and the metro area is home to more than 850,000 citizens.
Most importantly, 80 percent of Knoxvillians are unchurched. The area is growing, especially where we will be located. In the Hardin Valley community of west Knoxville, a new family is moving in every 36 hours. If we don’t invest in outreach to a growing area, that percentage of unchurched people will only grow. It’s crucial for us to be messengers of reconciliation.
